In 1921 Gerhard Colm received a Doctor of Politicial Science degree from the University of Freiburg. In 1920 he studied at the University of Munich and the University of Berlin in 1921, 1923.
Gerhard Colm served as a statistician for the Federal Statistical Bureau (1921 - 1927), but left government service to enter academia as head of the research division of the Institute of World Economics at the University of Kiel (1927 - 1933).
Gerhard Colm was a member of the American Economics Association and the International Phenomenology Society.
On September 11, 1922 Gerhard Colm married Hanna Nicolassen. They had three children: Peter, Anne, Stine, Claus. Later, she died. On April 11, 1966 he married Mascha Gilde.
