George Gamow

George Gamow, Russian author, educator. Recipient Kalinga Price award United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, 1956. Fellow U. Gottingen, Germany, summer, 1928, U. Copenhagen, Denmark, 1928-1929; Member American Physical Society, Washington Philosophical Society, International Astronomical Union, American Astronomical Society, National, Royal Danish academics science.

Background

  • Gamow, George was born on March 4, 1904 in Odessa, Russia. Son of Anthony and Alexandra (Lebedinzeva) Gamow.

  • Education

    • Student Normal School, Odessa, 1914-1920, U. Leningrad, 1922-1926 (Doctor of Philosophy., 1928).

    Career

    • He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Leningrad in 1928, then was a fellow at Göttingen,Gottingen, Copenhagen, and Cambridge, a master of research in the Academy of Science, Leningrad, and a lecturer at the universities of Paris and London. Gamow came to the United States in 1934 and taught physics, first at George Washington University and later at the University of Colorado.

The theory of alpha-particle disintegration, proposed by Gamow in 1928 (the same idea was put forth independently at about the same time by Ronald W. Gurney and Edward U. Condon), contributed to the understanding of radiation, alpha-particle transformations, and artificial disintegration of radioactive nuclei. Later Gamow became interested in the application of nuclear physics to astronomical problems. In 1946 he offered an evolutionary theory of creation: the universe, originally infinite in size and density, underwent a tremendous explosion that caused its expansion and the formation of the chemical elements, and, eventually, the galaxies and stars.
