Robert studied at Berea College in Berea, Kentucky, United States. In 1940 he became a Bachelor of Arts in biology. In this year he became a student of the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, United States. In 1942 he became a Master of Science in the area of zoology. In 1948 he was a student of the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois, United States. He received a degree of the Doctor of Philosophy.
Robert worked as an assistant at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in New York City, United States from 1948 to 1951. In this year he became an associate. he worked there until 1954. In this year he became a member of the faculty at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, United States. He worked there until 1982. From 1955 to 1964 Robert was the head at the department of zoology. In 1958 he became a professor. He worked there until 1982. From 1964 to 1982 he was a distinguished professor of the Alumni Foundation. Robert served to the captain of the Army of the United States, World World War, and World War II.
