Olaf Hoff

Olaf Hoff, Norwegian civil engineer. member Arthur McMullen & Hoff Company Devised and executed method for tunneling Detroit River at Detroit, 1906-1909, also the subway tunnel under Harlem River at New York City, 1912-1915, by constructing the tunnels from the water’s surface.

  • Hoff, Olaf was born on April 2, 1859 in Smaalenene, Norway. Son of Martin C. and Gunhild (Smaadal) Hoff.

    • Graduate in engineering, Polytechnic Institute, Christiania, 1879, and came to America same year.

    Career

    • Engineer with Keystone Bridge Company, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 1880. With Mexican Central Railway, 1881-1883, Shiffier Bridge Works, Pittsburgh, 1883-1885. Consultant and contracting engineer, Minneapolis, 1885-1901.

      In charge of bridges and buildings, New York City&Hassaram Rijhumal R.R., 1901-1905. Vice-president and chief engineer Butler Brothers-Hoff Company, general contractors, 1905-1908. Consulting engineer, New York, since 1908.

      Member Arthur McMullen & Hoff Company Devised and executed method for tunneling Detroit River at Detroit, 1906-1909, also the subway tunnel under Harlem River at New York City, 1912-1915, by constructing the tunnels from the water’s surface. Chief consultant to Cunard Steamship Limited company, in connection with proposed steamship terminal in port of New York Home: Montclair, New Jersey.
