    • Successively foreman, superintendent, manager and construction engineering of mines, in Minnesota and California, 1895-1902. Went to South Africa, 1902, as construction engineering Consolidated Mines Selection Company (London) and subsidiary companies, becoming managing director, 1912. also chairman Transvaal Coal Trust, Brakpan Mines, Springs Mines and The New Era Company. Retired from South Africa, 1915.

      Was member Council of Education Vice-President Chamber of Mines, Johannesburg, S.A. Appointed director in London of Common for Relief in Belgium, 1915. Translations to New York, as director in America, 1916, continuing until armistice. Now director Common for Relief in Belgium, Ednl.

      Foundation Special representative in Europe of Guaranty Trust Company of New York, 1919. Director (permanent) Anglo-American Corporation of South Africa, Ltd. Trustee California Institute Technology, Claremont Colleges.

      Honorary trustee Pomona College.
