He was graduated at Yale University in 1886, and took his Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Leipzig in 1893, studying also at the American School for Classical Studies in Athens the capital of Greece.

Geological, volc., petrol. investigations in Greece, Asia Minor, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Hawaiian Islands, and United States, and chemical study of igneous rocks and minerals.
