    • Student Ohio State University. Graduate Graphische Lehr und Versuchs-Anstalt, Vienna. Also studied Kunstgewerbe Schule, Vienna, and at Royal Technology College, London, England.

    • Art director The Roycroft Shop, East Aurora, New York, 1903-1910. Settled on farm in New York State, 1913. Moved to Chillicothe, O., 1919.

      Makes the paper for limited editions of books issued by himself. Designs, casts and sets the type, prints on hand press. Rosenbach fellowship, University of Pennsylvania, 1949.

      Honorary curator of graphic arts Harvard since 1950.

    • Author, compiler, translator, contributor publications on papermaking, latest are: Papermaking, 1947. Papermaking by Hand in America (1690-1815), 1950. Papermaking in Pioneer America, 1952.

      Japanese Handmade Papers, 4 vols., 1953. Contributor to Encyclopedia British, 14th edit. Contributing editor The Dolphin, New York.

      Established mill, in 1929, at Lime Rock, for the making of commercial handmade paper, reviving the methods of early centuries. Established Dard Hunter Paper Museum, Massachusetts Institute Technology, 1939, permanently moved to Institute Paper Chemistry, Appleton, Wisconsin, 1954.
