    Member North Carolina Assembly, 1764, head of Granville delegation in all North Carolina provincial congresses from 1774. Member committee which proposed Halifax Resolution of April 12, 1776 (instructing delegations to Continental Congress to vote for a declaration of independence). Member committee which drafted bill of rights for North Carolina.

    Member committee which drew up North Carolina Constitution of 1776. Member North Carolina Council of State. Member North Carolina House of Commons, 1777-1786, 88-91, 93-95, 97.
