    Career

    • Elder, Tennent Church, near Freehold, New Jersey. Trustee Princeton, 1778-1781. Became member local committee of safety.

      Delegate to 1st New Jersey Provincial Congress, New Brunswick, 1774. Speaker New Jersey General Assembly, 1776. Lieutenant colonel 1st Monmouth County Regiment, New Jersey Militia, 1776.

      Commissioned colonel, 1781. Delegate Continental Congress, 1777-1779. Present at Battle of Monmouth.

      His most important service was writing letter to John Hart (speaker New Jersey Legislature), strongly urging that state’s delegates to Congress be empowered to ratify and sign Articles of Confederation, 1778.
