    • Commissioned Lieutenant Continental Army, 1780. Served under Lafayette, 1781, later under General Green. Admitted to Virginia bar, 1788, practiced law, Monongahela and Harrison counties.

      Appointed attorney Virginia District Court. Member Virginia House of Delegates, 1794-1795. Commissioned major Virginia Militia, 1796.

      Moved to Fredericksburg, Virginia, 1796. Commissioned brigadier general Virginia Militia, 1802. Elected member Virginia Senate, 1800, speaker, 1804.

      Judge Virginia General Court, 1804-1811. Judge Virginia Supreme Court of the Appeals, 1811-1851, president, 1824-1830. Vice president Society of Cincinnati.
