Commissioner to Cherokee Indians to agree on line designated in Treaty of Holston, 1792. Appointed by Governor William Blount to try to conciliate the Cherokee, sent to accompany a deputation of Chickasaws to visit President United States, 1793. Temporary agent of Cherokee, 1794.
Active in persuading other tribes to remain at peace with United States during Creek War. Led expedition of about 600 Choctaw and Chickasaw Indians to Black Warrior River, 1814. One of 1st settlers of Tuscaloosa County (Alabama), in charge of land office.
Member United States House of Representatives from Alabama, 18th-20th congresses, 1823-1829. A commissioner to negotiate Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek whereby Choctaw Indians ceded all claims to land East of the Mississippi.
