      Commissioned colonel, 1862. Commissioned brigadier general United States Vols. Secretary State of Wisconsin, 1863-1864.

      Governor Wisconsin, 1866-1872. United States consul to Liverpool, England, 1872-1878. United States consul general to Paris, France, 1878-1880.

      State commander Grand Army Republic, 1886, became nat. commander -in-chief, 1886. A federal commissioner to settle Cherokee Indian affairs in Oklahoma. Commander-in-chief Military Order Loyal Legion.
