    • Admitted to Michigan bar, 1858. Practiced at Detroit until second in command Lieutenant Michigan cavalry, December 18, 1862. Promoted Lieutenant adjunct captain, and bvtd. major March 13, 1865.

      Returned to Detroit after war and practiced law. Fletcher professor of law, University of Michigan, 1886-1897. Candidate for justice Supreme Court, 1887, defeated.

      Member Congress to fill vacancy, August 17, 1893, to March 4, 1895. Defeated for re-election.
