    Career

    • Enlisted private 11th Indiana, April, 1861. Detailed for 1 year as assistant commissary-general Indiana. Commissioned 2d Lieutenant.

      Raised Company E, 17th Indiana vols. (Colonel Benjamin Harrison). Became its captain and after 2 years service honorably mustered out for disabillity contracted in service.

      Resumed printing and became foreman Indianapolis Journal, 1867-1872, St. Louis Democrat, 1872-1875. Superintendent plate printing Western Bank Note Company, 1875-1889 and 1893-1901. Director United States Bureau of Engraving and Printing, 1889-1893, and again since November, 1901.
