    • Educational public schools, Delaware. Removed to Illinois, 1858.

    Career

    • Enlisted in Union Army as private, 1862. Commissioned captain Company C, 98th Illinois Infantry, September 24, 1864. Served in Wilder’s brigade, Army of Cumberland.

      Participated in batles of Stone River, Tullahoma, Chickamauga, Mission Ridge, etc., and Atlanta campaign. Wounded, Selma, Alabama, April 2, 1865. Mayor of Cairo, Illinois, 1879-1883, 1897-1901.

      Elected to 60th Congress to fill unexpired term of George W. Smith, deceased. Reëlected 61st and 62d Congresses (1909-1913), 25th Illinois District. Defeated for reëlection, 1912.
