Lewis Wallace

Lewis Wallace, American lawyer, soldier, diplomat, author. member of the court that tried the assassins of President Lincoln, and president of court which tried and convicted Henry Wirz, comdt.

Background

  • Wallace, Lewis was born on April 10, 1827 in Brookville, Indiana, United States. Son of Governor David Wallace.

  • Education

    • Self-educated; began study of law. Served in Mexican war, Second lieutenant Company H, 1st Indiana infantry. Resumed study of law.

      Located in Covington, and later in Crawfordsville, Indiana.

    Career

    • At beginning of Civil War appointed adjutant general of Indiana. Soon after colonel 11th Indiana vols. Served in West Virginia.

      Became brigadier general vols., September 3, 1861. Commanded division at Donelson. Major general, March 21, 1862.

      Commanded a division at Shiloh. Prepared defenses of Cincinnati in 1863 and saved city from capture by General Edmund Kirby Smith. Later commanded Middle department and 8th army corps.

      Intercepted march of General Jubal A. Early on Washington. Fought battle of Monocracy, and saved Washington from capture, July 9, 1864. Was second member of the court that tried the assassins of President Lincoln, and president of court which tried and convicted Henry Wirz, commandant of Andersonville prison.

      Mustered out, 1865. Governor New Mexico, 1878-1881. United States minister to Turkey, 1881-1885. Author: Ben Hur, a Tale of the Christ, 1880.
