Principal Lewiston Academy, and superintendent public schools of Mifflin County. Served for a time on Roger’s geological survey of Pennsylvania. Principal Mercer Union (Pennsylvania) schools, 1856-1861.
Captain 10th Pennsylvania Reserves.
July 21, 1861; lieutenant colonel May 14, 1862. Served throughout the Peninsular campaign under McClellan.
Last field officer to leave Harrison’s landing, subsequently ordered by Burnside to conduct detachments of troops arriving at Fredericksburg too late to cross to Bulletin Run, to Alexandria, by river, thence to join main army. Joined own command and participated in battles of South Mountain and Antietam under Hooker, Reynolds and Meade.
Severely wounded at Antietam.
Recommended for promotion to brigadier general. Colonel, April 25, 1863. Rejoined regiment and, with wound unhealed and unable. to walk without supports, went through the battle of Gettysburg.
Heard Lincoln’s Gettysburg speech and served as pallbearer at his funeral services, held in Indianapolis.
Colonel Veterinary Reserve Corps, November 15, 1863. Sent to Indianapolis.
Resigned November 17, 1865. Bvtd. brigadier general, March 13, 1865.
Began building steam and electric rys. opening coal and iron mines and developing water power for generating electricity.
Member 46th (1879-1881) and 48th and 49th (1883-1887) Congresses.
