William Russell Ellis, American congressman. member 53d to 55th Congresses (1893-1899); member 60th and 61st Congresses (1907-1911), 2d Ore.


  • Ellis, William Russell was born on April 23, 1850 in near Waveland, Indiana, United States. Son of James and Susan (Stone) Ellis.

    • Removed to Guthrie Company, Iowa, 1855. Worked on farm and attended school. Later farmed, taught school and attended Iowa State Agricultural College.

      Bachelor of Laws, State University of Iowa, 1874.


    • 2d, Mistress Ida J. Scott, June 16, 1885. Practiced law and did newspaper work at Hamburg, Iowa. 2 years city atty, and 1 term mayor there.

      Removed to Oregon, 1883. Superintendent schools, Morrow Company, 1884-1885. District attorney 7th Judicial District, 3 terms, 1885-1890.

      Member 53d to 55th Congresses (1893-1899). Judge 6th Judicial District, 1900-1906. Member 60th and 61st Congresses (1907-1911), 2d Oregon District.
