  • Sweney, Joseph Henry was born on October 2, 1845 in Russell, Pennsylvania, United States. Son of Hugh and Esther A. (Phillis) Sweney.

    • Educated State University of Iowa, Bachelor of Laws, same. Unmarried. Private, corporal and sergeant Company K, 27th Iowa Infantry, 1862-1865. Served in Iowa National Guard, 12 years, retiring as brigadier general inspector general.

    Career

    • Admitted to bar; elected to Iowa Senate, 1883, 1887 (unanimously elected president pro tem., 1886). Member 51st Congress (1889-1891). In 1874, with his brother Charles, founded Sweney Brothers Bank of Osage.

      Later the Mitchell Company Savings Bank. In law practice at Osage, Iowa Trustee for 30 years, and part of time president, Cedar Valley Seminary, Osage.
