    • Education public and private schools, Fairfield and Salem, Illinois. Admitted to bar, Lebanon, Missouri, 1861.

    Career

    • James M. Durand, May 30, 1877. Appointed district attorney 18th Judicial District, Missouri, 1862. Resigned to become lieutenant colonel 32d Missouri Infantry.

      Wounded in battles Chickasaw Bayou and Arkansas Post. Assigned to staff Major General John A. McClernand. Served during campaign below and around Vicksburg, including assault of May 19-22, 1863.

      Later on staff Major General E. O. C. Ord, 13th Army Corps. Commanded his regiment during campaigns against Generals Forrest and Stephen D. Lee. Joined Grant’s army in attack on Missionary Ridge and Lookout Mountain, his regiment leading in assault and capture of Rossville Gap.

      Again on staff General McClernand, 1864. Served in General Banks’ Texas campaign. Assigned as judge military court, Department of Gulf, with jurisdiction over military, civil and criminal cases, serving till end of war.

      Delaware Philadelphia Convention, 1866. One of company which followed President Johnson on his “swing around the circle” through Eastern and Northern States. Elected governor of Louisiana, 1868.

      General Grant made him military governor until new constitution of state was accepted by Congress. After that was inaugurated and served until 1873. Became sugar planter Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana.

      Member Louisiana Legislature, 1876-1877. Delegate Louisiana Constitutional Convention, 1879. Collector customs, port of New Orleans, 1889-1893.

      Delegate Republican National convs., 1896, 1900. Built, 1890, and president New Orleans, Fort Jackson & Grand Isle R.R.
