    Career

    • Worked on farm; later in stores, St. Joseph, Missouri, and Chicago. Worked on plantations in South about a year. In mining and merchandising in Black Hills, 1875-1876.

      Moved to Hastings, Nebraska, 1878, engaged in business. President German National Bank, Hastings. Nominated May 2, 1900, by acclamation in Republican State Convention for government of Nebraska.

      Elected governor, but resigned and was elected United States senator, March 28, 1901, for term expiring 1905.
