  • Elrod, Samuel Harrison was born on May 1, 1856 in near Coatesville, Indiana, United States. Son of Jesse F. and Lydia (Pursel) Elrod.

    • Bachelor of Arts, DePauw University, 1882, A.M., 1885 (worked way through university by doing janitor work).


    • Admitted to bar, 1882, and began practice at Clark, South Dakot.


    The state should not use its authority to promote particular religious beliefs, nor should it require prayer or worship in the public schools. However, the state should leave students free to practice their own religious convictions.

    Party affiliation: Republican
