Engaged in general law practice, first at Danbury, North Carolina, 1878. In 1886 with W. B. Glenn and in 1891 with Manly & Hendren. Was assistant div. counsel for Southern Railway, attorney for Western Union Telegraph Company, etc.
Was member legislature, 1881. Solicitor for state, 1886. Elector for Cleveland, 1884, 1892.
United States district attorney, 1893-1897. Governor of North Carolina, 1905-1909.
