Member commission that represented United States Air Board at Inter-Allied Air Craft Standardization Conference, London and Paris; Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Royal Astronomical Society.
Successively, since 1890, superintendent, manager, president, Jones & Lamson Machine Company, Springfield, Vermont. Inventor and patentee of over 100 patents including Hartness flat turret lathe, Hartness automatic die, Turret equatorial telescope, Hartness screw thread comparator, etc. Chairman Committee of Public Safety, Vermont, war period, also federal food administrator for Vermont.
