      Merged with Atlantic National Bank of Jacksonville, 1930, of which was director until retirement, 1933. County judge McDonough Company, Illinois, 1886-1890. Member Illinois House of Republican, 1897-1905, speaker of House, 1899-1901, 1901-1903.

      Lieutenant governor of Illinois, 1905-1909. Appointed member Spanish Treaty Claims Commission, 1907, but declined. President Board of Administration of State of Illinois, having control of 17 state charities, 1909-1913.

      Elected United States senator, March 26, 1913, to fill unexpired term (1913-1915) of William Lorimer. Reëlected for term 1915-1921. $1.00 year man under Honorary Charles G. Dawes, director of the budget, in installation of that system.
