Accompanied Commander Wilkes in exploring expedition through islands, 1840.
Recorder and translator to King of Hawaii, 1842, secretary of state for foreign affairs, 1843, minister of foreign affairs, 1843-1845, minister of interior, 1845-1846, minister of finance, 1846-1853 (during all this time prime minister in fact if not in name). Represented King in committee which drew up liberal constitution of 1852.
