  • Owen, Robert was born on May 14, 1771 in Newtown, Montgomeryshire, Wales. Son of Robert and Anne (Williams) Owen.

    • Self-educated.

    Career

    • 3 sons including Robert Dale. Became assistant in sadlery at age 11, manager cotton mill in Manchester at age 19. Formed Chorlton Twist Company, 1794-1795.

      Moved to New Lanark, Scotland, 1799, became part owner of father-in-law’s cotton mills, set up modern industrial community. Inspired passage of ill-fated Factory Act of 1819. Campaigned unsuccessfully for widespread establishment of communities on New Lanark model.

      Founded experimental Community of Equality, New Harmony, Indiana, 1825, admitted its failure, 1827. Returned to Britain, promoted various associations, including Equitable Labor Exchange. Again resident in American, 1844-1847.

      Advocated unification of labor and cooperative movements. Was converted from agnosticism to spiritualism late in life. Convened Congress of the Advanced Minds of the World, 1857.
