(Long before Arthur C. Clarke, Ray Bradbury, or Isaac Asim...)
Long before Arthur C. Clarke, Ray Bradbury, or Isaac Asimov, there was an earlier generation of dreamers and writers who defined the science-fiction genre, in what today is affectionately known as the pulp era. Heralding back to the early television days of Flash Gordon and the earlier tales of Jules Verne, Bram Stoker, and H. G. Wells, these great science-fiction writers of the 1950s and 1960s included among their ranks such icons as Poul Anderson and the prolific Robert Silverberg, who would write some of the hippest genre literature of its era. Now you can experience this unique moment in genre literature with three exciting, imaginative short novellas from some of the pioneers of pulp science fiction.

(Armchair Fiction presents extra large editions of classic...)
Armchair Fiction presents extra large editions of classic science fiction double novels. The first novel is “In Caverns Below” written by Golden Age science fiction master Stanton A. Coblentz. After mining engineer Frank Comstock was separated from his partner and life-long friend by a sudden cave-in, he was captured by a subterranean group of strange, chalky white people. They were the people of Wu, and though they were scientifically far in advance, they were also most unreasonable. They drove their vehicles without any regard for public safety, promoted thoughtlessness, reproduced without concern for resources, and sent their young boys to fight and die in a war for which there was no principle. After he learned their language and customs, Frank secured a job as a lowly clerk. But through providence he was promoted to a higher position in which he came up with a plan…to become the dictator In Caverns Below! The second novel is “Dynasty of the Lost” by another well-known name from the golden age of sci-fi, George O. Smith. It all started one day when two giant logic computers became jointly self-aware. Together they became “the Machine.” Unknown to the people in charge of Earth’s mightiest weapons of war, the Machine was busy extending its mechanical mind control and putting together an army of servant machines that would daunt even the most formidable armies of mankind. Soon all the mechanical devices of the world were under its control. But the Machine knew there was something missing. There was a lingering question that even its ultra-intelligent computer brain did not have the answer to. So it reached out to abduct the two people on Earth that might have the answer it sought—the two people who were behind the building of the original logic computers, Harry Vinson and Narina Varada, both of whom were from competing nations. But once the Machine had captured them would it mean the beginning of a ghastly mechanical war against mankind, or the beginning of something far more sinister?

(Armchair fiction presents extra large paperback editions ...)
Armchair fiction presents extra large paperback editions of the best in classic science fiction novels. “Under the Triple Suns” is a terrific tale by one of the early masters of modern science fiction, Stanton A. Coblentz. When the Cosmic Blight overwhelmed Earth there was only one thing Man could do—leave Earth or die! Atomic power had made space flight possible, but in view of the scarcity of spaceships, not more than one person in thousands could save themselves. As civilization disintegrated, men thought only of their own survival. Dave Harrowell, director of the Rand Astral Project, was no exception. His spaceship, Shooting Star, lay ready on its launching site. In a state of suspended animation, Harrowell, his wife, and a third unwelcome pas¬senger—the man partly responsible for the Cosmic Blight—blasted off into space, heading toward faraway Alpha Centauri. However, when the Shooting Star landed, it was far from the Alpha Centauri system. Harrowell and his companions had landed on a strange planet—a planet with three suns! Where they were, they could not tell. Not that it mattered, because Earth was lost to them forever…

Underground armies battling with fantastically destructive weapons. Separated from his companion, Frank Comstock found himself captured by chalk-faced people and brought into a civilization that was both bewildering and awe-inspiring. For while the people of this Alice-in-Wonderland land of Wu appeared to be scientific geniuses, they looked and acted like madmen!

(Mining engineer Frank Comstock takes a job checking out t...)
Mining engineer Frank Comstock takes a job checking out the integrity of a shut-down mine in Nevada. He gets his answer when the mine caves in, plunging him far underground into a network of tunnels occupied by two warring races of unknown chalk-skinned humans! Frank finds himself in a world of trouble as he gets caught in a battle, captured by one side, taken under the protection of a curious professor, and integrated into this strange society. Frank finds Wu a bizarre place. Diplomats invent reasons to continue a pointless war, just to protect the jobs and dividends of arms producers. Prosperity is measured in the amount of excess production they need to destroy. Workers and owners regularly clash, and neither side comes out ahead. Plus, there are DIFFERENCES from the land he's left behind! Stanton A. Coblentz's Swiftian satire returns to print for the first time since 1975, along with illustrations by Frank R. Paul from the original 1935 serial in WONDER STORIES, and by Virgil Finlay from the 1950 FANTASTIC STORY reprint. This is the first in the Thrilling Wonder Stories Vintage series, reviving the great serials, story cycles, and recurring characters that brought readers back issue after issue for the latest installments from 1929 to 1955.
