Educated Portsmouth Academy, New Hampshire (U.S.), 1833-1838. Graduated from the United States Military Academy, West Point, 1842.
Engaged in Mexican war, 1st with General Taylor from beginning through siege of Fort Brown and campaign of Monterey, and next with General Scott in siege of Vera Cruz and battle of Cerro Gordo. Was banker in Saint Paul, 1855-1861. Was colonel 1st Minnesota volumes at Ball’s Bluff in Civil war, then brigadier general in all battles of Army of the Potomac up to and including Battle of Antietam.
Then major general and commanding division and corps and department to end of war.
Was wounded at Cerro Gordo and again at Antietam. After war engaged in mining in west.
General agent American Russian Commercial Company in Alaska and Washington, 1866-1871. Afterward connected with several railroads.
Married Sue Lewis Martin Sandford, 1844.
