Savage, George Slocum Folger was born on June 29, 1817 in Upper Middletown (now Cromwell), Connecticut, United States. Son of Captain Absalom and Sally (Wilcox) Savage.

Bachelor of Arts, Yale, 1844. Graduated from Yale Theological Seminary, 1847. (Doctor of Divinity, Iowa College, 1870, Chicago Theological Seminary, 1903).
