At 17 had attained much local prominence as an amateur baseball player. Gained national fame as a pitcher. Joined Boston Club, 1871, and until 1875 was its pitcher and captain.
Joined Chicago Club, 1876, and remained with it as, consecutively, manager, secretary and president, until 1891.
Established with brother and brother-in-law, in 1876, firm of A. G. Spalding & Brothers, sporting goods, of which became president Later organized a manufacturing branch as the Spalding Manufacturing Company, becoming president Organized and managed world-tour of the Chicago and All-Am baseball teams, 1888-1889.
