Attended Harvard; studied art under Thomas Couture, Paris, France.
Came under artistic influence of Millet at Barbizon, circa 1847. Established himself in Boston, 1855, expounded ideas of Barbizon school so well that Boston became 1st American market for their works (Millet, Rousseau, Diaz, et al). Works include Peasant Girl at Barbizon, Girl at a Fountain, The Bathers, portrait of Chief Justice Shaw.
