Donat Raymond

Senator Donat Raymond was the driving force behind professional hockey in Montreal for nearly half a century. His work with the Canadian Arena Company and the Canadiens hockey club earned him a permanent slot among the sports icons of that city.

Career

  • A high profile member of the community, Raymond was heavily involved in horse racing and served on the Board of Governors of the University of Montreal and Notre Dame hospital. He also served on the executive of a host of prominent businesses such as the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, the Canadian International Paper Co., and Dominion Glass Limited. Raymond was appointed to the Senate as a Liberal on December 20, 1926 and held this position until his death on June 5, 1963.

    Raymond was elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1958.
