Strax was known as the doctor who spurred on research and practices to detect breast cancer. He was propelled into action when his first wife, who later died from the disease, discovered that she had breast cancer.
Strax created a long-term study using almost 62,000 women in New York to determine whether early detection of the disease reduced the risk of death from that disease. The study determined that early detection was significant in reducing mortality. Strax later founded several clinics that focused on providing early breast cancer detection for women - often at no charge.
The doctor also loved to write poetry which, according to his daughter, usually revolved around the theme of “always do more for others than is done for you.’’ Writings include Early Detection - Breast Cancer Is Curable (1974) and Control of Breast Cancer through Mass Screening (1981).
Philip married on January 28, 1949, and had six children: Norman, Rita, Polly, Marshall, Gayle, Richard.
