Caesar von Hofacker was born on 2 March 1896.
The liaison man between von Stuelpnagel and his cousin, Lieutenant-Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, in Berlin, von Hofacker was also implicated in efforts to bring Field Marshal Erwin Rommel into the conspiracy when the final defeat of the German army appeared to be imminent. Following his arrest after the failure of the July 1944 plot, von Hofacker was tortured by the Gestapo, blurting out Rommel’s name to his interrogators and thereby sealing the latter’s fate.
Von Hofacker was tried and found guilty of treason by the People’s Court, dying in agony on a meathook on 20 December 1944.
