Harmodio Arias Madrid was born n Rio Grande, Panama on 3 July, 1886.
He was educated abroad, attending the London School of Economics, and received a degree in law and political science from Cambridge University in 1911.
He rose to power through a highly nationalistic and racist-oriented movement, Acción Comunal, which staged the Revolution of 1931. In the subsequent election of 1932, Arias emerged as president.
Following his presidency. Arias became a major shaper of public opinion through his newspapers. El Panama América, La Hora, and La Critica, and a chain of radio and television stations. He used the media to push chauvinistic nationalism and to promote the political career of his brother, Amulfo Arias Madrid.
