Feijó Diogo Antônio was born on 17 August 1748 in São Paulo.
Fearing insubordination of the army, he created a national guard to suppress regional disorders. He was elected sole regent of Brazil in October 1834.
Feijó succeeded in putting down regional revolts that had broken out in various parts of the nation. However, he stirred up considerable controversy with the Catholic Church by favoring abolition of clerical celibacy and encouraging the Brazilian church to act more independently of Rome. In 1835 a bill to separate the Brazilian church from Rome was narrowly defeated in the Chamber of Deputies.
On September 19, 1837, Feijó resigned when the Chamber of Deputies refused his request for more troops to put down a rebellion in the province of Rio Grande do Sul.
