He studied at the Polytechnic Academy in Philadelphia.
He continued his training in draftsmanship in the office of the late Samuel Shaw, one of the city's oldest professional architects. In 1879 he joined the office of Furness & Hewitt, and a few years later after Mr. Hewitt withdrew from the partnership, became a member of the new firm of Furness, Evans & Company. In that association he continued active in practice until the death of Mr. Furness in 1912. During the last quarter of the nineteenth century the firm designed a number of important public and commercial buildings in Philadelphia, including the Broad Street Railroad Terminal, (1881-84), the Library at the University of Pennsylvania, designed in the Gothic (1889-91), the Commercial Trust Building, the West Street Trust Company, and the Morris Building.
In addition Mr. Evans was architect of several collegiate buildings, notably Brown Hall at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pa., and the Library at Princeton University (1891). During a later period in his career he was associated with McKim, Mead & White on the Girard Trust Company Building (1907) and the Franklin National Bank, both in Philadelphia.
Mr. Evans at the time of his decease was the oldest member of the Philadelphia Chapter, A.l.A.
