Mr. Herts later studied in Rome, in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, and at Heidelberg University, returning to America in 1900.
Noted in the field of theatre design, and in partnership with Hugh Tallant (Herts & Tallant) he designed many places of amusement on Broadway soon after the turn of the century. The Amsterdam Theatre, one of the firm’s earliest works completed in 1902. is said to have been the first built with a cantilever balcony. Herts & Tallant also designed the Lyceum Theatre on Broadway and the Follies Bergere on West 46th Street, while their most im¬portant building of the period was the Brooklyn Academy of Music, completed in 1908.
The partnership with Tallant ended in 1912. Herts continued in business with assistant Herbert J. Krapp and produced the Booth, its companion the Schubert, and the Longacre Theaters. Krapp left the firm in 1915.
