He emerged as a second-rank military figure during the independence struggle alter 1810. When José Antonio Páez led the movement to separate Venezuela from Simón Bolivar’s Gran Colombia republic, Soublette supported him.
When Páez, first president of Venezuela, decided not to run again alter his first term, he chose Soublette to be vice presidential running mate of Páez’ choice for president. José Maria Vargas. When Vargas finally withdrew from the presidency in 1837, Soublette succeeded him.
After Soublette’s first presidency, Páez returned to office in 1839. However, four years later, Páez again decided to turn the post over to Carlos Soublette, whose administration was the last securely Conservative regime to hold office.
During the Federal War of 1859-1863, Soublette held secondary positions in the Conservative regime of that period. He also reappeared, for the last time, playing a small role in the very short-lived Conservative regime of 1869.
