He attended the Colegio de San Carlos in Buenos Aires.
He became a businessman and landowner in Entre Rios and governor of the province in 1841. Ten years later, he organized the struggle against Rosas and defeated him in the Battle of Caseros in February 1852. He was then president of the Argentine Confederation (1854-1860) but failed to bring Buenos Aires into the Confederation. His forces were definitively defeated by those of Buenos Aires in the Battle of Pavón in 1861, although he continued to be governor of Entre Rios. His influence was essential in the election of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento; as Argentine president in 1868. Urquiza was assassinated by supporters of a political rival.
