He studied chemistry at Berlin University and received doctorates in engineering and agriculture.
He set up his own laboratory for industrial chemistry and later became a consultant to the chemical industry and director of the Bavarian firm Stickstoffwerke A.G.
Nikodem Caro’s main areas of research involved the catalytic oxidation of ammonia, calcium carbide and acetylene, the partial condensation of gases, and the gasification and gas production of turf. He developed the cyanamide process for nitrogen fixation.
Caro took out many patents and published Handbuch Fiir Acetylen in 1904. He was a member of the Leningrad Academy.
