He settled in Chicago early in life and began his career in the architectural office of John C. Cochran. A few years later he moved to Minneapolis, and after being associated for a time with R. S. Allen, entered into partnership with Fred Kees under the firm name of Kees & Long. Following Mr. Kees subsequent retirement, a new firm, Long, Lamoreau & Long was organized, of which he remained a member during his remaining years. The firm did much architectural work in Minneapolis, designing, among other buildings, the City Public Library, dating from 1884; Andrus Building, 1888; County Court House and City Hall, 1896; Masonic Temple; Hotel Madisos; Dyckman Hotel; Security Bank Building; Farmers' & Mechanics’ Bank, and the Plymouth Building.
