(This book of translations evolved, bit by bit, over a ver...)
This book of translations evolved, bit by bit, over a very long time. The translator is aware, to this day, that as a goal this project is mission impossible, given the insurmountable chasm between Rabindranath Tagore’s lyrical mastery in the Bengali original, and the disfigurement inherent in channeling his creation into another language. Nevertheless, during the emergence of this collection, requests and impulses came from a variety of sources over the years to translate Ayi Bhuvanamanamohini as part of a dissertation on Gandhi’s Satyagraha devotionals; Anandaloke Mangalaloke, Ogo Kishore Aaji Tomar Daare, Sudhasagaratire Hey and others to celebrate weddings; Amaye Bolo Na Gahite Bolo Na and Hey More Chitto Punno Tirthe to commemorate Tagore’s numerous odes to India; Nrityera Tale Tale and Eyi To Tomar Alore Dhenu writing about Tagore’s lifelong interest in science and its manifestations in creation; Kyano Cheye Aachho Go Ma, Amar Jabar Byalaye Pichhu Dake and Phule Phule Dhole Dhole recalling the use of Tagore’s songs in cinema. Thus was the collection built up with encouragement from a nuclear physicist, a surgeon, an office secretary, an-architect-turned-author and numerous others from different stations of life. This modest collection, a labor of love, consists of samples of Tagore’s vast collection of songs taken from the different genres found within his compendium in Bengali, Gitabitan, covering among others Puja, Prem, Swadesh and Prakriti.
