Background
George was born in Navrongo in the extreme north of the country almost on the border of Upper Volta (present-day Burkina Faso) on July 7, 1938. His father was Adonake Aduga who was known as, Minyila. His mother was Tipura Buga, she healed from Chana Asonia in the Upper East Region of Ghana.
Education
George completed his education at the renowned northern Government Boys’ Secondary School at Tamale, where he got a West African School Certificate in 1957.
Career
George joined the army in 1958 and did officer cadet training at Teshie, going on to Sandhurst in Britain, to get a commission in 1962.
He commanded the 1st and 6th Battalions of infantry at Takoradi and was for two years in charge of the Recruit Training Centre at Kumasi. In 1968 he was made assistant quartermaster-general of the 2nd Battalion of the Infantry Brigade, Kumasi. Before the Ghana coup, he was Deputy Director of Logistics at the Ministry of Defence and he was brought in on the coup at an early stage. He was then appointed Regional Commissioner for his home area, the Upper Region in the extreme north of the country.
Colonel George Minyila served in the government of the Supreme Military Council as Minister in charge of Trade and Industry; Minister of Local Government and later Eastern Regional Minister. He is best remembered for reforms he introduced in the Eastern Region where he was assigned, under Acheampong’s policy to deploy Ministers to regions they did not hail from.
