New York City, the unique metropolis that Le Corbusier has called "a beautiful catastrophe," is a natural home to Bruce Gilden. Since 1981, Gilden has been roaming the streets of the city, capturing its characters and eccentricities with his confrontational, highly energetic style and exuberant vision. In his new opus, A Beautiful Catastrophe, Magnum photographer Bruce Gilden celebrates a trademark style with abandon, firmly ensconcing him in the pantheon of New York City street poets.

A documentary artist in the tradition of street photographers such as Weegee, Bruce Gilden has a sharp eye for idiosyncracy. Unlike many other street photographers, Gilden often used his flash to make his subject aware that they were being photographed and draw them closer to his lens, much in the way that theater lighting draws the audience nearer to the actors on a stage. The resulting intimacy is rare of images largely set in urban locations and public spaces.

A defining characteristic of Gilden’s photography is his creative attraction to what he calls characters’. This new body of work, however, is somewhat of a departure for him in that these tightly cropped, full face images can be seen as collaborative’ portraits. His subjects engage directly with the camera, and the photographs are all taken with permission.
