Ranalli earned a BA from Clark University, Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1968 and an MA from Boston University in 1971.
A self-employed consultant since 1979, he was director and artist-in-residence at the Artists Foundation in Boston from 1975 to 1979. He served as associate director of Beacon College, both in Boston and Washington, D.C., from 1973 to 1975, and from 1971 to 1973 was assistant program director for the North East Board of Higher Education in Wellesley, Massachusetts.
A member of the Boston Visual Artists Union since 1974, Ranalli was its vice-president in 1978, and was a member of the Massachusetts Alliance for Arts in Education from 1977 to 1979.
