Angkor, the ancient seat of the god-kings of Cambodia, is the great treasury of Khmer artistic culture whose evocative, enigmatic sculptures are known throughout the world. Marc Riboud, the celebrated French photographer, visited the site several times, first in the late 1960s and in November 1990, capturing its monuments and inhabitants before and after the terrible years of the Khmer Rouge and the Killing Fields.

It was a major feat when, in December 1956, Marc Riboud became one of the first Western photographers to enter China after the Communist takeover of 1949. A member of the famed Magnum photo agency, Riboud was permitted to return to China at regular intervals over the next four decades, observing and recording the enormous changes that have taken place. French journalist Jean Daniel provides a thoughtful introduction and Riboud himself comments on each photograph, explaining the time, the place, and the circumstance.

Marc Riboud was born on June 24, 1923, in Lyons, Rhone-Alpes, France.
After the war, Marc Riboud studied engineering at the École centrale de Lyon (ECL) from 1945 to 1948 and is self-taught in photography.
Until 1951 Marc Riboud worked as an engineer in Lyon factories, but took a week-long picture-taking vacation, inspiring him to become a photographer.
Over the next several decades, Marc Riboud traveled around the world. In 1957, he was one of the first European photographers to go to China, and in 1968, 1972, and 1976, he made several reports on North Vietnam.
Later Marc Riboud traveled all over the world, but mostly in Asia, Africa, the U.S., and Japan. He has been witness to the atrocities of war (photographing from both Vietnam and the American sides of the Vietnam War), and the apparent degradation of a culture repressed from within (China during the years of Chairman Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution). In contrast, Marc Riboud has captured the graces of daily life, set in sun-drenched facets of the globe (Fès, Angkor, Acapulco, Niger, Bénarès, Shaanxi), and the lyricism of child's play in everyday Paris.
