Emmanuel Sougez studied painting at the Bordeaux School of Fine Arts, beginning in 1904, and started photographing around the same time.
From 1905 to 1914, Emmanuel Sougez traveled widely, including Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. After the First World War, became a freelance photographer, based in Paris. There he formed the group "Rectangle" which exhibited modern photography and with some of its members, after the war, helped establish its successor, Le Groupe des XV.
In 1926, Emmanuel Sougez founded the photographic department for the French weekly newspaper, L'Illustration, and promoted the use of colour photography.
Sougez's work is in the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
