Hiromi Tsuchida's 3rd book on Hiroshima, 2nd to feature places, buildings, and objects in relation to the epicenter of the 1945 atomic bombing. Tsuchida returned to Hiroshima in the early 90s to photograph places he shot in the late 70s. The vantage points were the same. Images old and new are placed side by side for comparison on opposite pages showing the changes that transpired in this period of time.

From 1968 to 1975, during a time of accelerated political, societal, and economic change in Japan and growing affluence, Tsuchida turned his lens to the people seeming left behind, the older generations, and the rural populace. As Kazuhiko Komatsu writes in the accompanying essay (available in both Japanese and English): Some may see Zokushin as just a record of the ways and habits of a few people as they lived in the 1970s, in a few corners of rural Japan. They would see nothing "ethereal" at all. I must say I feel sorry for such people and wonder what may be missing from their lives. How can one look - really look - at these faces, bodies, arms, legs, postures, gestures, and not recognize what it means to live? How can one not be drawn in and deeply moved?

Jiro Mitsuda (12 at the time) was on his way to school, 1,200 meters from the hypocenter. He was burned on the upper half of his body and on his legs. On returning home, he helped to fight a fire. Five days after the bombing, he breathed his last breath, saying, "It’s dark. Please put on the light…I need water. Buy me some ice cream…."
